The students were respectful, well behaved, and deeply knowledgeable. Well done, Mrs McDonald for your teaching in HaSS. Canberra is really set up well for school visits.
There were so many highlights that it is difficult to name just one, but meeting the Governor General was one, as was the Last Post ceremony. Firm favourites for me are Parliament House and the Canberra Deep Space Complex. I love the fact that the famous words of Neil Armstrong, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” would never have been heard without Australia’s input. More information about Canberra is in the link below, the information is taken from the Condingup PS students, Mr Saul and my reflections, as well as the student diaries. In the library there is a small book about our time in Canberra, with photos, if you want to have look.
To make the trip happen it took many people, who deserve our thanks. A big thank you to Lynley Neill and Tracy Berry at Scaddan for all the organisation. I was lucky enough to attend with Lynley Neill, Hannah Chitty, and Nick Saul, and they were excellent to work with. Thank you, parents, for letting your child go to the other side of the country! As a school, we also have to thank the sponsors of our jackets CSBP, AFGRI, and Clarke and Stokes. They were impressive and just what we needed and they are excellent quality. You can see the jackets throughout the photos below. Thank you so much.
The final thank you is to PACER. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding $1785.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. This is a stunning amount and made the trip a possibility.
To be able to go to Canberra and learn firsthand about the nation’s capital is a formidable experience. The student’s knowledge of culture, history and democracy has certainly been greatly enhanced.
